You don't need a frontend, its not that complex a task assuming the access points are open. Obviously replace <wlan0> with your interface.

$ ifconfig wlan0 up
# You can do these next three in one line if you want...
$ iwconfig wlan0 ap any
$ iwconfig wlan0 channel auto 
$ iwconfig wlan0 key off
$ iwconfig wlan0 mode managed
$ dhcpcd wlan0
Also iwlist wlan0 and grep can get you whatever you want to know about available networks.

Add this to wpa_supplicant.conf and it will do exactly what you want:
